Imagine having your summer dreams come true: miles of white sand and the emerald blue sea of Costa Smeralda, the picturesque sailing port of Cannigione, or the elegant Porto Cervo, where the beautiful people shop in Armani and Gucci stores and the world's best yachtsmen gather for the Rolex Maxi Cup.

All of these gems  are within an easy car ride from "Casa La Maddalena", perched high on a hill in the midst of luscious macchia trees. From the terrace, the spectacular view (see banner, above) reaches to Maddalena archipelago and beyond.

Lazy cooks will enjoy the delicious italian pizza at the nearby inn. And if you decide to call it a quiet day with no more ambitions than to splash in the pool or to add some ice in a cool glass of lemonade, there is plenty to enjoy around the house: a few laps in the infinity edge pool will help to shed those winter pounds, or simply relaxing with the latest summer novel in an easy chair.

"Casa La Maddalena", a chic modern summer residence, is perfect to realize your and your family's summer dreams. Comfortable guest rooms sleep eight, the superbly equipped kitchen and the cozy living room offer plenty of space for the whole family to relax or enjoy a delicious meal, prepared with flavorful local produce. And, following Al Gore, our carbon footprint was reduced by installing a solar-panel warm water heating system.

“La Maddalena” was recently designed & constructed by Pietro Giordo and Dino Ribichesu, a local architect/builder team who excel in combining traditional Sardinian architecture with the requirements of a chic, modern summer residence while leaving nature undisturbed. You will find comfortable guest rooms sleeping 8, a superbly equipped kitchen and a cozy living-dining area with plenty of space for the whole family to relax or enjoy a delicious meal, prepared with flavorful local produce.

To significantly reduce "La Maddalena's" carbon footprint, we have recently added a solar panel warm water heating system thus eliminating the need for propane gas for most of the year. Al Gore's "inconvenient truth" inspired us to take this first step, which may be followed by photo-voltaic power generation as we gain experience. Watch this space!

How to get there

 

By ferry, the best way is from Genova or Livorno to Olbia with daily runs during the summer season. From September to May, the direct ferry is from Livorno only. By air, Olbia can be reached from many European capitals, mainly directly by charter or commercial through Milan or Rome. The house is within 20 km from either port or airport where you can pick up your rental car.

• Moby Line: from Genova (June-Sept), Livorno (all year) or Piombino to Olbia. Piombino-Olbia offers the shortest (4.5h) (and cheapest) rides in return for a longer car ride. Proceed to online booking

• Corsica/Sardinia Ferries: from Livorno or Civitavecchia to Golfo Aranci (Olbia). Proceed to online booking

• from Olbia airport (distance to house about 20km) or from the ferry port (point "A" on Google map) in Olbia take SS 125 in direction of Palau (the road from the airport crosses under the river in a tunnel to join the road from the port)
• after the tunnel continue on SS 125 for about 20 km (dont turn right to Costa Smeralda or Porto Rotondo) until you see the county sign of "Arzachena" (about 500 m following the Ristorante Shergan on the right and the polo field on left - about 4 km before the town of Arzachena) and continue for about 200m downhill where the SS125 turns left (if instead you reach a large roundabout you are too far ahead - turn back on the SS125 for about 300m and turn left)
• turn right (at point "B" on Google map) and continue on a small bitumen road for about 200m (follow detailed map below Google Map)
• take the first right and continue on a narrow and steep cement road uphill.
• After about 300 m following an uphill right and left turn  you see the house featuring a large terrace in the front (picture below) on the left

Things to do - discovering Costa Smeralda

Around the house

Want to enjoy privacy? There is a cozy guest room just a few steps down from the main house. It is perfect for late sleepers or those putting the finishing touches to their new novel or movie project.

Flower and bird aficionados will love this place. The house is situated on a hectare of nearly impenetrable machia land. Around the house and the pool you will admire beautiful mediterranean flowers, from Bougainvillea to Gardenias. Explore a bit further, and you will find the machia is the perfect breeding ground for rare birds and insects - paradise for you and your children.

Jog to San Pantaleo

Joggers bring along the Nikes! A 4 km run through the hills starts just above the house and ends in San Pantaleo, a quaint little mountain village. During the day you will find the village elders sitting in the shade involved in endless discussions.

San Pantaleo market

Thursday morning is farmer’s market at San Pantaleo, where you can buy the lot, from delicious ingredients for your next meal to a wide selection  of locally made colorful fabrics, antiques, art or jewelry. During “Happy Hour” the village square wakes up after the hottest part of the day - join the locals for a refreshment on the Piazza next to the church. The Costa is a beach lover's paradise. Explore some of the Costa's most breathtaking beaches here .

Maddalena archipelago

Nearby Cannigione or, further north, Palau are perfect to start exploring the Maddalena archipelago and “Parco Marino”. Located between Corsica, the breezy Boche di Bonifaccio and the northern tip of Sardinia, this beautiful stretch of deep blue sea and small islands can easily be visited on a one day sail boat cruise. Deserted powder-white sandy beaches and dunes such as the "Spiagga Rossa" at Budelli (shown above), sculpted rock formations a rich fauna and flora shape this largely untouched landscape.

If sailing is not your thing a visit by ferry to Maddalena and Caprera islands and the Garibaldi museum is an attractive alternative. Check this Quicktime video clip for a teaser.

Pevero Golf

Pevero Golf is a real gem. Built by Trent Jones this 18-hole championship course surrounded by Machia and the island’s most stunning beaches has all it takes to keep you on your toes: long up and downhill drives, nasty dog-legs, plenty of water  and sand bunkers protecting the greens and, never to be ignored, a stiff Maestrale breeze. You will find a hole by hole description of the Pevero course here or enjoy the video clip above.

The devil wears Prada

Need to make up for a round of golf you had all by yourself at Pevero in the morning? Then take your spouse for an afternoon stroll to Porto Cervo, the mekka of Gian Franco Ferrer, Gucci and Prada. It's not for the faint hearted and a real challenge to your credit card, but it is well worth your while. Watch this to get a first impression of what Porto Cervo is all about.
